How many of us have heard of the Lingerie Football League?
I would say only a handful but the name certainly does catch our attention, especially with the picture.
Besides being a 7-on-7 game played indoors, it is the female version of the American Football League. It was founded in 2003 and has 10 teams on it so far.
It is amazing how sports have revolutionised and so did sports wear. It would have been hard imagining pretty women playing sports, much less such a rough sport 20 years back. I was surprised after viewing the website of Los Angeles Temptations. They had pictures of the team members getting dirty on the field, knocking one another off, just like the male version of the game.
The only difference, just as the name hinted, was that the players are dressed in lingerie. It must be weird watching the match which seems more like a lingerie fashion show except that they are clad in shoulder pads, elbow pads, knee pads, garter belts and helmets.
As much as I support women being involved in sports, are of equal status with men and can do anything men can do and perhaps just as well, I do not see the need or reason for a lingerie football league. Football is a healthy sport that enables women to channel their energy and feelings into but there is certainly no need for the lack of clothing with too much flesh exposed.
This topic did made me wonder, was it founded by a lingerie shop trying to sell their products? Although I do not deny this is a unique marketing strategy for the sport and will definately bring in the crowd, especially the opposite gender.
